The problems that don’t need a hook

A lot of “I need a tow” calls end with the vehicle driving away on its own. These are the ones we can usually fix right where it sits.

Jump starts

Nothing when you turn the key, or a slow weak crank — that pattern is almost always the battery. We jump it and can test the battery and alternator on the spot, so you know whether it will strand you again tomorrow.

Tire changes

With a usable spare this is a short visit, not a tow. Worth knowing: most donut spares are rated for about 50 miles and 50 mph, so the tire shop is your next stop. On a highway shoulder, let us do it — we bring lighting and a truck between you and traffic.

Fuel delivery

We bring enough to reach a pump. If it’s diesel, say the word “diesel” on the call — a dry diesel system often needs priming before it will run again, and delivering the wrong fuel is a catastrophic mistake. Stop cranking either way; a dry pump does not enjoy it.

Lockouts

Keys visible inside an empty vehicle is routine work with the right tools, and no damage to the door or the weatherstrip. Have your ID and something showing the vehicle is yours — we do have to ask.

A person or a pet locked inside? Call 911 first, right now. Emergency services can force entry immediately. Call us afterward if you still need the vehicle opened cleanly.

The honest part

We’ll tell you straight

A roadside fix is a fraction of the cost of a tow, which is exactly why you should be suspicious of anyone eager to hook your car before they have heard what it is doing. Describe the problem on the phone and you will get the honest read: if it sounds like a battery, we come jump it; if it sounds like a flat, we come change it.

And when it is not fixable at the roadside, we say that too. An engine that cranks fine but never fires, a bad mechanical noise, a flat with no usable spare and no open tire shop nearby — those are towing jobs, and pretending otherwise just leaves you stranded twice. Same truck, same call either way; nothing about your day gets worse for asking.

Lost the keys entirely, rather than locked them in? That usually means a tow to whoever can cut and program a new one — modern vehicles will not start without a programmed key, so opening the door is only the easy half.

The 30-second checklist

  • Where you are. An address, a cross street, a parking lot, or a highway mile marker.
  • What it’s doing. Nothing at all? Clicking? Cranks but won’t fire? The sound tells us which fix to bring.
  • Gas or diesel. If you ran dry, this word matters more than any other on the call.
  • For a flat: which wheel, whether the spare is usable, and whether you have the wheel-lock key.

Injuries, or a vehicle blocking a live lane? Call 911 first. Then call us.
